Statutory interventions

GMS team members serve in a number of different Statutory Intervention roles and this work has helped many school boards address difficult and challenging situations.  Many a school has worked through the problem with an intervention, which has enabled the board to pick up the responsibility much better prepared to meet more difficult situations in the future. It has been a learning and developmental process for everyone including principals.

The Ministry of Education places statutory interventions into schools after assessment of the specific issues facing the school. Education Review Office reports, specific school reviews or serious ongoing problems in areas such as curriculum, personnel and/or finance inform the process before the decision is made as to what level of Intervention is introduced.

Once there is clear evidence that the school has control of the situation and everything is back to normal in a sustainable manner, the decision is made through a review process to revoke the intervention. At that point the board takes full control of the school again and often for a period of time is supported by ongoing training to make sure everything is clearly understood and stable.

The positive outcome of this sort of work is that the problems facing the school are addressed effectively and efficiently.
