Mediation

Mediation

From time to time boards are faced with dissenting views between:

  • Employees
  • Community members and the board
  • Board and employees.

Resolution through mediation is often used as a means of achieving sustainable outcomes.

Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution that is far less cumbersome and time consuming than almost any other form of resolving difference. Its strength is that those who have participated in the process own the outcome.

The process is one in which a skilled facilitator allows parties in conflict to work through the issues in dispute and to come to their own agreed resolution. It is not a process in which the mediator makes any decisions for the parties.

Governance Management Strategists has within the team a qualified mediator who can be contracted by your board to assist in these situations.

If your school is in need of a skilled mediator the following steps will be taken:

  • Issues that need mediating are talked through with the board
  • Facilitator meets with the disputing parties separately confirming that they wish the dispute to be resolved by mediation
  • Facilitator gathers some background to the issue and ensures the parties to mediation understand the mediation process
  • Mediation meeting occurs at an agreed date and time

Mediation is an inexpensive and effective alternative to legal processes. In instances where there is a personal grievance has been lodged it is appropriate that mediation is sought through the Employment Mediation Service.
